I have so much respect for small business owners, I have so much respect for small business owners, especially those who employ others. It takes serious commitment and hard work to build something from the ground up and next level commitment by those who create jobs for others. Crazy to think that around a third of small businesses don’t make it through their first four years and by year five, more than half have closed. Thanks to all the small business owners out there. Five years ago I lined up for the Finke Desert Rac Five years ago I lined up for the Finke Desert Race to raise awareness for mental health and funds for Beyond Blue. I made it there and back, we raised $20,000 for Beyond Blue and sparked many conversations about mental health (met Toby Price too!). Looking back at these photos, I was physically strong, I looked happy and was achieving things on the outside, but I wasn’t in a great place mentally. I’ve struggled with my mental health most of my life and this time was one of the hardest. The reason I share this is because mental health struggles don’t always look the way you might think. Sometimes you’re still showing up, still working, still racing and still smiling. You hide a lot of what’s going on inside. Today, I’m in a good place and I have been for a few years. It took a lot of support from family and friends, professional help, medication when I needed it, being around good people, a lot of hard work and an ongoing commitment to looking after myself. I still have shit days but not often. If this post encourages one person to reach out for help, check in with someone or start a conversation, I think that’s worth the discomfort of once again sharing a small part of my story. JP x
